A Writer Progresses 9-16 June led by Kirstan Hawkins.
Kirstan is a novelist and anthropologist. The author of Dona Nicanora’s Hat Shop, published by Penguin, she teaches on the Novel Studio programme at City University London and mentors several writers each year to the completion of their manuscripts. Many of her students have found representation as a result of the work they did with her. She has mentored writers at CofM for the past 6 years. She studied anthropology at Edinburgh University and has travelled extensively in her work in Africa, Latin America and Asia. She carried out fieldwork for her degree among the Ashaninka Indians of the Peruvian Amazon, and for her Ph.D. she spent time in the altiplano of Bolivia. Her first novel was based on material gathered in Bolivia while researching for her PhD in anthropology and international development. Her interest in anthropology is driven by the same fascination that underpins her writing: to understand the world from different viewpoints and to gain the ‘insider’s perspective’ in different situations and contexts.
